In Richmond

‘One Silver Dollar’ – Marilyn Monroe

We breakfasted, eating Traditional English, before leaving for Swaledale and the town of RICHMOND.

The weather was fine, and the coach-ride gently satisfying.

‘The Ride of the Valkyries’ – Wagner

Once in RICHMOND, we sought suitable lodgings and were advised by a local to call upon the hostess of WINDSOR HOUSE (off Richmond Square, with its church and war memorial), which, like THE ARCADIA was very much hotel-class rather than simple, basic and traditional B+B.

In RICHMOND, Mr Gordon and I dealt out our money on a great many bargains (principal among which was a huge pile of Doctor Who magazines, found in the basement of an army surplus store, dating from the period in which he and I had chosen not to subscribe to that publication (basically 1985 – 1988).  We bought the whole lot and shared them between us.

We also drank real ale and made quite merry in the beautiful Castle, which was an inspiration to us both.  I had also bought a cassette of Wagner, which I played on my headphones during the moments I wasn’t with Flash, just wondering around the Norman keep and marvelling at the sites and sounds of Swaledale.  I love ‘The Ride Of The Valkyries’.

A walk by the River’s edge, with the Swale eagerly beating its harsh brown way in our own direction, led us to penetrate the lush green suede of nearby woodland.
